The Philadelphia Fancy Brigades, one of the four divisions that participate in the annual "Philadelphia Mummers Parade" on New Years Day. The Fancy Brigades have been characterized by their huge floats and props, elaborate costumes and big Broadway style productions centered on a single theme. Comprised of 12 individual organizations called brigades, that must have a least 31 marching members. The brigades march fourth in line in the outside parade, but in 1998 did something totally unique. They moved inside to the Pennsylvania Convention Center and perform two shows for sold out crowds. Moving inside provided spectators with a whole new venue, to sit indoors out of the elements, and watch a colorful spectacle that is truly Philadelphia. This also guaranteed a mummers performance on New Years Day regardless of weather. The brigades still participate in the outdoor parade and still march in the fourth position, but leave all the huge floats indoor, which enables the groups the ability to intermingle with the crowds and make them part of the celebration.
